Bidirectional charging lets your electric vehicle do more than draw energy from the grid—it can send stored energy back out. The three most common forms are:
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): plug small appliances or tools directly into the car’s onboard outlet (1.5–2.4 kW on most EVs).
- Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): the EV powers your whole house through a certified bidirectional charger and transfer switch during an outage.
- Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): the EV exports power to the utility during peak-demand events and can earn bill credits or payments.
Enphase’s upcoming IQ Bidirectional EV Charger (expected in 2026) is built around the same microinverter-based architecture Pinnacle already installs. Highlights from Enphase:
- Up to 11.5 kW bidirectional AC power flow between the EV, home, and grid.
- Managed through the Enphase App, switching automatically between charging, V2H backup, and V2G export.
- Integrated Black Start for instant home backup during grid outages.
- Designed to ISO 15118-2 and 15118-20 standards and supports OCPP 2.1.
- Works with the IQ Meter Collar for whole-home monitoring and grid-agnostic V2H/V2G operation.
- Scales with Enphase solar and IQ Battery storage for a complete home energy system.
Other manufacturers are moving the same direction. As of mid-2026, V2H-capable EVs include the Ford F-150 Lightning, GM’s Ultium lineup (Chevrolet Silverado EV, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq/Escalade IQ/Vistiq/Celestiq), the Tesla Cybertruck with Powershare, the Kia EV9 with Wallbox Quasar 2, the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 with dcbel Ara, and CHAdeMO-generation Nissan Leaf systems. Many more brands are expected to add certified V2H/V2G hardware through 2026–2027.
